Spwci
Magazine produced as part of the Magazine Journalism diploma. Spwci is fake Welsh for ’spooky’ and is based around paranormal or unusual goings-on in Wales. A Welsh Fortean Times, if you will. The group wanted to give the magazine a more visual and dynamic design than that of Fortean Times. This was quite a challenge when the magazine is based around things you rarely see. My official role within this team was designer/occasional subeditor.
Winner of Student Team of the Year at the Press Gazette Student Journalism Awards 2007. It was judged by Times reporter Lucy Bannerman, News of the World feature writer Gemma Calvert, Sun deputy editor Fergus Shanahan and Loaded editor Martin Daubney. This is what they said about us:
“This was a tough category for the judges with entries from all disciplines of journalism. But the winning entry was described as entertaining, imaginative, worthy and full of energy. You could sense the fun and team spirit – true team effort and brilliantly laid out magazine to boot.”
